The old mill in Sundborn today houses a vibrant exhibition space where art and stories come to life. The summer exhibition is “Carl and Karin Larsson – For Love Is All” and will be shown from May 23 to August 23, 2026. Since its opening with “Sundborn Goes Extreme – Again,” Konsthallen Kvarnen has presented a series of acclaimed exhibitions, including “Karin 150 Years” and “Crazy Carl.” As a complement to the Carl Larsson House, Kvarnen offers new perspectives and deepens the encounter with Carl and Karin Larsson’s world.

Konsthallen Kvarnen

The old mill in the center of Sundborn, dating back to the mid-17th century, is one of the village’s most unique buildings and is located just a short walk, approximately 250 meters, from the Carl Larsson House. Today it houses a vibrant exhibition space where exciting exhibitions are shown during the summer months, often with perspectives from Carl and Karin Larsson’s world – in a setting that is well worth a visit in itself.

The mill’s rustic interior bears clear traces from the time when it was in operation, with raw timber walls and wide floorboards where the gaps between the boards bear witness to the building’s history.

Konsthallen Kvarnen is unfortunately not wheelchair accessible. The premises have high, narrow stairs up to the second and third floors.

Carl and Karin Larsson
– For Love Is All

The artist Carl Larsson’s impoverished upbringing is marked by great challenges, but also by much love from his mother and grandmother. Carl loses his first family, but toils onward in desperate courage, as he himself describes it. Instead of giving up, he chooses life there and then by the black waters of the Seine.

Curiosity and creative passion took Karin Bergöö out into Europe to study art in Paris in 1882. Thereafter, Karin travels to the artists’ colony in Grez-sur-Loing where she meets Carl and love blossoms; the following year, 1883, they marry in Stockholm. He embraces art and becomes one of Sweden’s most beloved artists. Karin absorbs new trends and influences and develops them over time into her own expression. Her artistry is characterized by a colorful and modern artistic practice that still fascinates.

The artists Carl and Karin Larsson create in symbiosis the Gesamtkunstwerk Lilla Hyttnäs in Sundborn, and over time the couple’s free decorating style becomes almost synonymous with the image of Sweden. The family is blessed with eight children, and in the dining room at Lilla Hyttnäs it reads “Love one another, children – for love is all.” Love of art, of family, and of nature characterizes the Larsson artist family. Not least, love of life. For love is all.

Design Shop

The Carl Larsson House’s own design shop is open during the summer and is located on the ground floor of Konsthallen Kvarnen. Dating back to the mid-17th century, the old mill gives the shop a charming character and forms a pleasant backdrop for an assortment where traditional and modern meet.
